Individual Counselling
Make it stand out.
As a medical mom myself, I get it. The grief, fear, sadness, depression, anger, loneliness, questions, sleepless nights, middle of the night researching … it’s a club I never thought I’d belong to, but it allows me to support other medical parents in a way that couldn’t be done without experiencing it too.
You may have tried therapy before, and maybe even found it helpful, but it may have felt like something was missing. That although the therapist was great, they didn’t quite understand what you were navigating.
Watching your child suffer, struggle or feel different than other kids, trying to navigate their questions of “why me?”, seeing how other kids treat or stare at them, becoming intimately familiar with medical terms, diagnoses, hospitals, etc, asking the “why them?” question yourself, seeing other kids hit milestones and reach goals, worrying about their future … it’s a lot. And it is so hard, regardless if you’re one day or 10 years in. It’s exhausting, sad, frustrating, terrifying, lonely, angering. It’s also not something that is talked about very much - with friends and family downplaying or not knowing how to support you. It’s a reality and an experience that more and more parents are living, yet one that is next to impossible to find targeted mental health support for. It’s a club you probably never thought you would join either.
As a Registered Psychotherapist, I am trained in Somatic Experiencing - a body based approach to working with trauma (because let’s be honest - being a medical parent is full of trauma). I work with parents who want to learn how to navigate the intense emotions, to regulate their nervous systems and to find support and guidance in the midst of the chaos. I can’t change yours or your child’s circumstances, I won’t tell you that everything will be okay, I won’t downplay it, I can’t promise it won’t continue to be traumatic, I won’t give you a “reason” that you are going through this - but I can help you learn how to find some calm in the storm. To navigate it with more ease. To regulate your nervous system so that you can continue showing up for your child.
